To Those Referred Here From Creek Running North

Apparently I “lost time” again, because every time I do, Chris Clarke decides to write another blog post. I’m not sure what that means, or why I sometimes wake up with a splitting headache in the middle of Joshua Tree National Park*, but I do very much enjoy reading his writing, whatever the source.

* The worst part? Apparently it’s actually the Mojave Preserve, which helps explain why trying to follow Google Maps home usually ends me up in Yakima.

It’s Post Title-riffic!

I don’t know if you’ve read Pandagon today, but it’s undergoing some changes, some for the better, others involving me. But never fear, intrepid reader! The Guns of Auguste will live on!

I can’t reveal exactly how I will choose what topics and posts will appear on which blog, but it involves this equation:

Is there any reason for me to post this video? Probably not, but I don’t care:

Tumbleweeds

For the rest of the week, I’ll be posting at Rox Populi. I’d try to write both places, but let’s face it, my output isn’t exactly high to begin with. I shall return, and triumphantly!

A dramatization of the Chuckles-Tucker incident, as told by Tucker to the Washington Post:

Click image for full-size glory. I guess I don’t blame Mr. Carlson for freaking out. After all, Chuckles had just killed Bill Foster.

Disclaimer here.

Update: More background.

I’ll Believe it When I See a Glacier In My Backyard, and Not Before

If the British are right, this should be a very interesting State of the Union.

Bush and Blair held private talks on climate change before Christmas, and there is a feeling that the US President will now agree a cap on emissions in the US, meaning that, for the first time, American industry and consumers would be expected to start conserving energy and curbing pollution.

‘We could now be seeing the beginning of a consensus on a post-Kyoto framework,’ said a source close to the prime minister. ‘President Bush is beginning to talk about more radical measures.’

“Bush’s change of heart began when it was learned that the glacial ice lost to global warming was, in fact, turning up in hell, leading to unprecedented low temperatures and a real danger of it freezing over.”

Kurt Davies from Greenpeace has it right, though:

‘The sands are clearly shifting on climate change for this administration, but there has to be a concrete follow-up,’ he said. ‘We were shocked last year when he talked about the US being addicted to oil, but then there was no follow-up to that.’

“And when I say concrete follow-up, I’m not talking about paving ANWR.”

Thoughts On Christmas Gifts #4

No, not really. Dammit.

Joe Sacco is a frigging genius, and his work feels like the natural result of the “Graphic Novel Renaissance” which I may have just now made up.

But [oh my god I can’t believe I’m about to say something this pretentious] there’s a truth to Sacco’s work that’s not even present in a lot of photojournalism. It’s an amazing medium, he’s an amazing artist, and Palestine is destined for long-term greatness.

Anybody Got a Rain Slicker?

Because I have the feeling we’re about to be drenched in wingnut [bodily fluids]:

Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, sentenced to death for his role in 148 killings in 1982, will have his sentence carried out by Sunday, NBC News reported Thursday. According to a U.S. military officer who spoke on condition of anonymity, Saddam will be hanged before the start of the Eid religious holiday, which begins this Sunday.

If there was ever a case to be made for the death penalty, Saddam’s probably a prime candidate. I just don’t happen to think there’s a case to be made for the death penalty. And there certainly isn’t a case to be made for the type of chest-thumping, morbid celebration we’re about to be subjected to by the wingers.

Thanks to Ben Shapiro, I’m looking forward to reading “The Audacity of Hope” even more.

These are not the words of a moderate. They are the words of a man who fits right in with his radical base. The hatred for Reagan, Bush and, in particular, the revulsion he feels at traditional religion, is palpable. Those who endorse Obama must look beyond his fraudulent rhetoric before signing off on his agenda.

Hell, I’ll sign off right now. A radical candidate who’s as popular as a mainstream one? Signed, sealed, delivered, I’m Barack’s.
