Of Limited Interest

How I feel about Civil War, basically:

Steve McNiven, Dexter Vines, and especially Morry Hollowell, however, do not.

I like the plot for its “shake-shit-up” factor, but the actual scripting lacks oomph. Big time.

But that art? Fantastic.

  1. Yeah…I don’t think that hole is deep enough to hide the rot smell that is going to emanate from the dude. The six feet need to be adjusted for scale.

  2. Yes, they should have done him in the way they do beached whales — with dynamite. Then you bury the little pieces all around…

And one of Civil War’s biggest criticisms has been, ” . . that the characters haven’t been acting like they should”.

Considering how Tony Stark has been regressed into a fuckin’ dry drunk that worships authority, I can just see him blowing up Bill Foster’s 20 ton corpse. I don’t see any mis-characterizations in that, do you??

Honestly - I’ve been withholding any severe criticism for CW for the most part, waiting to see what happens at the end. Except it seems like no one now knows where the fuck this is going and how many more issues it will take to get there. And on the way, we’re going to just throw the characters in new directions that have little point.

  4. I read more about this on CHUD and about 52 (the DC version) and I was utterly uninterested. I collected comics in junior high and high school but can’t care less about them now. Except for Frank Miller. I like his stuff and still have all my original versions of 300.

  5. ew, chuckles. ew. Frank Miller is a disgusting hack. 300 is possibly the ONLY good thing he’s ever written. The man is utterly incapible of writing a female character that is not a whore.

As if I needed evidence for my opinions, look at Dark Knight Strikes Again. the man had a DECADE to write that thing, and it was still ugly as sin, poorly scripted, and full of terrible dialogue.

yes yes, we owe him a debt, DKR was a landmark book that allowed comic books to mature into an art form the best of it currently is. that does not make DKR good by any standard, the same way Captain America Comics #3 is a landmark for being Stan Lee’s first published work. it’s still childish and campy and full of poor art with skewed perspective. Miller AND his forthcoming “Holy Terror, Batman!” with 68 pages of his Self-Insert Batman beating up Osama Bin Laden can all die in a fire.

FWIW, 52 has actually been remarkably good. It has a few things going for it: Grant Morrison, who is insane but a fantastic writer, has taken a major lead. It’s had relatively little filler, and actually progresses issue to issue. and when a single issue is somewhat disappointing, the weekly schedule means they’ll pick up and bing you something better a few days later, instead of waiting TWO TO THREE MONTHS for Civil War.

I actually work in a comic shop. I make a habit of reading pretty much everything we get in, and actually pay for owning my own copy of alot of it.

  6. ahem. that should have ended with

I actually work in a comic shop. I make a habit of reading pretty much everything we get in, and actually pay for owning my own copy of alot of it. so I generally have a high opinion of most current work. although of course I have my pet peeves. but “all the new stuff sucks” is generally not accurate
